#1 Where to begin?

If you are like most people, change, any kind of change, especially one involving what you eat or attempts at an exercise routine, feels HARD and overwhelming! Like, a million steps to see any kind of progress.

#2 What is your WHY?

This is essential. Ask yourself, what is motivating me towards this nutrition/health/exercise goal? To look better? To FEEL better? To be able to play in the backyard with my grandchildren? To carry 2 bags of groceries up a flight of stairs?

#3 Why is this so HARD?

The reality is, change IS hard. It’s deciding to purposely do something different. That means changing mindset and making a concerted effort to make changes, small, perhaps big, to reach a different outcome.

I like the analogy, if you are steering a boat, and, you change course by 1 degree, you will end up in a completely different place than you intended. Or, making 1 small change per day, or, even 1 per week, is 52 changes in a year!

Doing the same thing, expecting different results, will NOT get you where you need to go.

#4 What is Intuitive Eating and is it for ME?

You may have heard of intuitive eating, and, overall, I support this, however, it does not come naturally or easily for everyone. It is a style or approach to eating that includes focus on health, no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ foods and tries to focus on how you feel vs. just the number on the scale. It’s ultimately about trying to eat when you are hungry and stop eating when full. The reality is, many people come to me because they just want someone to ‘tell them what to do’ and, that is OK! Ultimately, like the expression, “If I give you a fish, you eat for a day, if I teach you to fish, you eat for a lifetime”, my goal is to teach you to be self-sufficient, but most need someone to tell them the steps to take to reach this goal. I’m here to do both: tell you what to do and, teach you how to fish.

#5 Get off the diet treadmill!

Do you feel you are a yo yo dieter? Weight goes up and then you decide to ‘buckle down’, ‘get serious’ etc. and this involves feelings of hunger, deprivation, struggle until eventually you see some progress, only to then feel like you binged and the weight comes right back on, and, then sometimes more? #6 Find your WAIE!

You might be asking “What on earth does that mean?” As a play on words, to ‘Find your way’ or “Find your weigh”, I prefer the acronyn “Find your waie”. This stands for “Why Am I Eating”. So many of us, myself included, eat for reasons other than hunger. We eat because it’s there. We eat because we are bored. We eat out of habit. We eat for emotional reasons. You get the point. I will help you identify these triggers and find replacement behaviors.

#8 Where you are is where you are supposed to be.

What I mean is, you are HERE, taking the first step, embracing the challenge before you. Understand your power to manifest YOUR destiny. By taking the first step, you begin the journey towards reaching your goals. I personally find when I have an accountability partner, I am more likely to reach my goals. I have hired various coaches over the years for different things because I get better RESULTS. Having someone to ‘check in’ with consistently means I hold up my end of the bargain, and, with the guidance of my coach, small tweaks help me change course. #9 T minus…. WHEN?

Do you say, or does someone you know say, I’m going to start my diet Monday? Or, your New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight? The significance of this is a ‘starting fresh’ mentality, as in, let me get through the weekend, or, let me get through the holidays, then my mind will be clear to focus on THAT.

The reality is, healthy living is baby steps, not one giant leap that is going to move you forward, but, rather, a subtle shift in your approach. It may be more “SEXY” to go for the ‘giant leap’, it almost always backfires without any lasting or sustainable changes or goals achieved. While it may seem daunting to shift mindset, it CAN be done. #10 The 5 Pillars to Success.

I recently met someone new who had been successful in losing 60# and keeping it off.  He felt there were 5 pillars to his success:  1. sleep 2. nutrition 3. exercise 4. stress reduction 5. hydration. I agree with this wholeheartedly, and, what do these things have in common? MINDSET. The last is the most challenging because while the other things could be considered ‘external’, mindset is internal. I can help you tap into that unused or underutilized resource of your mind. #11 SCARCITY– What is a scarcity ‘mindset’?

This is a belief or state of thinking that there is not enough of something; money, time, opportunities, FOOD… This can happen when there is a history of restrictive dieting. It can make someone obsessed with the lack of what they want and can lead to poor food and lifestyle choices. I am very familiar with the diet mentality and can help you or your clients break free from this type of thinking.

#12 What to buy + What to cook = What to eat!!

In all the years of working with clients I’ve found their biggest challenges include figuring out which foods to buy (in the form of reading food labels, which can be overwhelming), and, in creating fun healthy quick easy meals. I will work with you to do both by visiting your grocery store with you and coming back to your house to whip up a delicious meal you and your family will enjoy.
